The 2009 US Open Tennis Grand Slam event created a number of sustainable initiatives including:
- Recycled 17,000 tennis ball cans and 60,000 tennis balls
- Purchased renewable energy
- Each day 125 fans won a $4.50 New York Metro cards to encourage public transportation
- Lexus hybrids made up 50% of the player transportation fleet
- 2.4 million napkins used for food comprised of 90% Post Consumer Waste (PCW)
- Percentage targets set for printing on FSC and PCW paper
- Bathroom paper towel dispensers replaced with motion-sensors
- Billie Jean King and Alec Baldwin acted as spokespeople in an awareness campaign
- Public announcements on jumbotrons by players featuring environmentally friendly messages
- Percentage targets of organic and local produce (featuring New York pickles and beer)
- Merchandising containing more environmentally friendly materials
