Sustainable Efforts at the SSET Seminar

The Sustainable Sport and Event Toolkit Seminar, held 24-25 June 2010 at the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland not only presented sustainable guidelines for sport events, but implemented sustainable practices into the organisation of the seminar as well.
Initiatives included:
Transportation & Accommodation
Venue – The Starling Hotel – was walking distance from the Metro, provided a convenient location for local attendees, and was the site of all seminar activities.
Video Conference – one out of country presenter was by live video feed.
Food
Banquet dinner was vegetarian with local produce used.
Lunches had one vegetarian option and one low impact meat option of chicken or fish.
Real silverware and dishes were used instead of disposable.
Coffee urns were provided instead of individual capsules.
Fresh, local produce was served whenever possible.
Water
No bottled water was provided.
Decanters with fresh lemons were provided for speakers and delegates.
Real drinking glasses only.
Paper
Printed less and on-demand.
When necessary, printouts were double sided and on recycled & FSC paper.
Speaker notes were provided on-line.

Fantastic that you focused on the everyday, within-reach and budget-friendly aspects of keeping an event sustainable. We advocate this “entry level” of sustainability effort for our clients, knowing that phrases like LEED-platinum Facility are quite intimidating.
